WWF Wildlive – Saimaa Ringed Seal

WWF brings you a live cam starring an endangered freshwater seal that lives in Lake Saimaa, Finland. Normally, it takes extraordinary luck to see a Saimaa ringed seal in the wild, but we are changing those odds.

The Saimaa ringed seal is one of the world’s most endangered seals, found only in Lake Saimaa, Finland.

In spring and early summer, Saimaa ringed seals go through their annual moulting season: they haul out onto shoreline rocks and islets to dry their fur. The old coat can only shed when the fur is completely dry – so basking in the sun is anything but laziness.

The camera is placed at a moulting site favoured by the seals, capturing the progress of spring – and hopefully the seals themselves. Norppalive lets you observe the seals up close without disturbing them!
